The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine (PVM), Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS), invites applications for a full-time (12 month) Assistant Professor position in Veterinary Ophthalmology. The position will be Clinical-track. The successful candidate will join an established ophthalmology team consisting of two board certified ophthalmologists, two full-time veterinary ophthalmology nurses, an ophthalmology veterinary assistant, an ophthalmology client liaison, and two ophthalmology residents. The successful candidate will have access to a dedicated ophthalmology operating suite, two state-of-the-art operating microscopes, two phacoemulsification units, anterior and posterior segment digital photography equipment (including an infrared camera and RetCam), diode and CO₂ lasers, ocular ultrasonography equipment (high resolution and ultrasound biomicroscopy units), Spectralis OCT and OCTA, ERG unit capable of pattern and multi-focal ERG, and an on-site CT and MRI. The caseload is comprised predominantly of small animal and equine cases with additional farm animal and exotic cases. The PVM is highly supportive of individual faculty career growth and development. A formal faculty mentoring program is in place and mentorship of junior faculty members is a high priority.

Qualifications for the position include a DVM or equivalent degree, completion of an ophthalmology residency program approved by the American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ABVO), or board certification by the ABVO. Candidates should have a sincere interest in providing outstanding clinical service, teaching, and an interest in clinical research. Candidates must possess excellent surgical and diagnostic skills, as well as outstanding interpersonal, communication, and teaching skills, and be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and house officers. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. A background check is required for employment by the University.

The Purdue University Veterinary Hospital is nearing completion of a major expansion project. Encompassing 162,500 square feet, the new David and Bonnie Brunner Purdue Veterinary Medical Hospital Complex will include three components located just east of the existing Lynn Hall of Veterinary Medicine:

• The David and Bonnie Brunner Small Animal Hospital (adding 65,000 square feet to the existing small animal hospital facilities in Lynn Hall)
• The David and Bonnie Brunner Equine Hospital
• The David and Bonnie Brunner Farm Animal Hospital

Scheduled to open in spring 2022, the new complex will provide improved teaching facilities dedicated to educating the next generation of veterinary professionals, providing top quality compassionate animal health care, and serving as a catalyst for interdisciplinary clinical research.

The successful candidate will actively participate in the learning, discovery, and engagement activities of the PVM and the VCS department with a focus on learning and engagement. Important activities include: Teaching/Learning: Participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM and veterinary nursing curricula, clinical teaching in the Veterinary Hospital (VH), and participation in training house officers. Clinical Service: Providing excellent clinical service to both large and small animal patients of the VH (70%-time commitment for clinical track positions); instructing and supervising veterinary students, veterinary nursing students, and house officers; and building strong relationships with referring veterinarians. Discovery: All faculty are expected to collaborate on clinical research projects. Research that complements the interests and strength of current faculty interests is ideal but can also be tailored to the candidate’s specific background and interests. Opportunities for collaboration exist in the areas of animal welfare, infectious disease, immunology, neuroscience, and oncology. Strong internal grant programs are available to support faculty and resident research. Faculty also participate in university-wide graduate programs (MS and PhD). Service and Engagement: Participation in committee work, professional organizations and community service, delivery of continuing education programs and other appropriate activities.
