The College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences is seeking a Community Medicine Veterinarian to deliver quality pet health care and train veterinary students to practice along a continuum of care, focusing on outreach to underserved communities. This position will oversee case management of sick and wellness appointments seen by veterinary students, as well as provide instruction in clinical skills. The focus will be on creating and delivering service learning opportunities and outreach for pets living in resource-limited environments with veterinary services being delivered along a continuum of care. This position will also involve identifying clinical competencies required for new graduate practitioners to be proficient in Community Medicine principles and aligning these competencies with the DVM curriculum.

Faculty role - non-tenure track, Assistant, Associate or Full Professor - rank dependent on qualifications

Requirements

• DVM/VMD (or equivalent foreign degree)
• Must be licensed or eligible for a Minnesota state veterinary license
• Minimum 2 years clinical experience including primary-level care, spay/castration/soft tissue surgeries and dental procedures
• Commitment to didactic and clinical teaching
• Excellent oral and written communication
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

Preferred

• Five or more years clinical experience in primary care, including spay/castration/soft tissue surgeries, dental procedures and student teaching
• Clinical experience in community medicine
• Clinical experience or interest in behavior management of pets
• Experience in community engagement and partnership building
• Clinical skills teaching experience (DVM students)
• Experience with curriculum development and teaching
• Public health experience in barriers to care and social determinants of health
• Fluency in a second language

Duties/responsibilities

• Primary care level case management (medical and surgical) in service learning and resource-limited settings, in collaboration with partners such as AHS University Ave Clinic, and student-led programs with Native American partners (SIRVS) and NGOs in underserved metropolitan areas (VeTouch). Student-led programs may require occasional weekend work and travel.
• Clinical supervision and instruction of DVM students including teaching of clinical skills through hands on and didactic methods throughout four years of curriculum with emphasis on allowing autonomy relative to student year and abilities.
• Expand opportunities for experiential Community Medicine training through partnership with AHS University Ave
• Contributing to the development of didactic coursework and integration into all four years of curriculum
• Course contributor for community medicine didactic classes and experiential learning
• Evaluation and outcome assessment for students and program metrics
• Teaching - clinical skills and class presentations as assigned
• Other duties as assigned
